IMO introduced mandatory standards on the energy efficiency (EEDI) of the majority of new built vessels and further regulations are expected to be developed for ship types not already covered. The Energy Efficiency Design Index and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) has been adopted for existing ships in an attempt to monitor (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicators -EEOI) and improve their efficiency.

The learning objective of this course is to enable officers and crew onboard ships to become familiar with the ballast water management methods commonly used to meet the requirements of the International Convention for the Control and Management of ships' Ballast Water and sediments and thus minimise environmental damage caused by the transfer of ballast water.
